Ethylene oxide (EO) is a colorless gas widely used to preserve dry food. Residues of EO and its degradation products need to be monitored since their consumption negatively impacts human health. Ethylene oxide poses challenges for analysts as a small and highly volatile molecule. This means that special precautions must be taken during sample preparation to avoid analyte losses through evaporation. A comprehensive workflow from sample extraction to highly sensitive GC-MS/MS analysis is presented, meeting regulatory compliance according to the SANTE validation criteria for pesticides residues in food and feed.

In this case study, you’ll discover:

  • The utility of the Thermo Scientific™ TRACE™ 1610 GC system and the Thermo Scientific™ TSQ™ 9610 triple quadrupole
    GC-MS/MS for the analysis of ethylene oxide and 2-chloroethanol residues in food samples.
  • A comprehensive workflow from sample extraction to highly sensitive GC-MS/MS analysis.
  • Regulatory compliance according to the SANTE validation criteria for pesticides residues in food and feed.
  • The robustness of the system to provide stable results during a 3-day unattended sequence.

Although the use of pesticides in foods of plant origin is controlled through good agricultural practices, pesticide residues may be present in some food products. Recently, there has been significant growth in the number of pesticides to monitor for in foods, including those in complex food. Due to this increase, there is a higher demand for an accurate, efficient, and cost-effective method to test for these pesticides.

High-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) allows researchers to screen and identify pesticides in a variety of foods. In this special collection, Wiley has partnered with Agilent Technologies to bring together articles that detail how mass spectrometry can be used to analyze various pesticides in foods. This important compendium features content from Agilent Technologies and Wiley publications.

In this collection, you’ll learn about:

  • How a quadrupole time-of-flight method can deliver a fast analysis;
  • A pesticide screening methodology using a quadrupole time-of-flight LC/MS system;
  • How HRMS can be used for the analysis of pesticide residues in food;
  • General information on the HRMS methodology; and
  • What results can be obtained through various forms of HRMS instrumentation.

Many U.S. states and Canada have legalized medicinal and recreational marijuana, which has increased consumer demand for cannabis and cannabis-infused products. With respect to regulations in the U.S., there is little harmonization between the federal and state governments. Therefore, it has been left to the states, which has created a disparate mosaic of laws across the nation.

To meet regulatory requirements, cannabis and hemp products require numerous safety tests. Among the necessary tests for these products is the analysis of heavy metals, such as arsenic, cadmium, mercury, and lead.

Wiley has partnered with Agilent Technologies to bring together a special collection of articles detailing testing methods for determining heavy metals in cannabis and hemp products. This important resource features articles from Agilent Technologies and Wiley publications, including Food Quality & Safety.

In this collection, you’ll read about:

  • Testing methods to ensure the safety of cannabis-infused foods and beverages.
  • The potential of hemp for paired phytoremediation and bioenergy production.
  • The challenges of cannabinoid potency testing.
  • The current potency trends for THC and other cannabinoids in cannabis.
  • Heavy metals testing method using ICP-MS, approved by AOAC.
  • Determination of heavy metals in cannabis and hemp products following the AOAC method for ICP-MS.
